Prospective graduate students

The Weigel Lab is not recruiting PhD students for Fall 2027. We accept PhD students through the Oceans PhD Program. If you are interested in joining our team, please contact Dr. Brooke Weigel and provide a brief summary of your research interests & relevant research experience, and attach a CV or resume. I encourage you to reach out to me in advance of the December application deadline. Graduate students at Hopkins Marine Station have compiled this guide with frequently asked questions and advice about the graduate school application process.

Prospective PhD students should have a strong academic record, curiosity about the natural world, and enthusiasm for marine ecology research! Desired skills include experience with marine ecology fieldwork, designing ecological experiments, culturing marine algae, DNA sequencing & genomics, bioinformatics, cold water SCUBA diving, stable isotope ecology, or biogeochemistry. Our group welcomes students from diverse backgrounds and experiences, and we seek to build an inclusive, supportive & diverse research group with a strong sense of community.

In addition, I can accept PhD students through the Emmett Interdisciplinary Program in Environment & Resources (E-IPER) PhD Program, which is a very interdisciplinary program where students have two co-advisors from different disciplines. Students should reach out to multiple faculty listed on the E-IPER program website, and the application deadline is in mid-November. Students should be interested in completing a truly interdisciplinary PhD; examples of projects include working with kelp farmers to bridge the natural and social sciences, or exploring the diversity of marine algae through the lens of both genetic sequencing and art.

Prospective postdocs

The lab is currently supporting potential postdoctoral researchers interested in applying for fellowships. Please email me to discuss project ideas and opportunities! Postdoc fellowship opportunities include:

Undergraduate Research Opportunities

Undergraduate researchers are welcome to inquire about potential research opportunities in the lab, which is based at Hopkins Marine Station. Summer opportunities for undergraduates are available through the following program:

• Hopkins Internships - Summer Undergraduate Research Funds (HI-SURF) is a summer research program for Stanford University undergraduate students at Hopkins Marine Station.
