Phycology & Microbial Ecology at Hopkins Marine Station

The Weigel Lab is part of the Oceans Department at Stanford University, within the Doerr School of Sustainability

We are based at Hopkins Marine Station in Pacific Grove, California

Our research group studies the ecological and physiological responses of primary producers and microbial communities to global climate change, and the consequences of those changes for marine ecosystems. We are particularly interested in the feedbacks between climate change, kelp forests, microbes & carbon cycling in the ocean. We employ a variety of tools and methods, including field and laboratory experiments, genomics, bioinformatics, algal culturing, ecophysiology, and biogeochemistry to improve our understanding of the impacts of climate change on nearshore marine ecosystems. Overall, we work on research that will inform conservation and management of marine ecosystems as they respond to our changing climate.
