Phycology & Microbial Ecology at Hopkins Marine Station

The Weigel Lab is part of the Oceans Department, within the Doerr School of Sustainability at Stanford University.

We are based at Hopkins Marine Station in Pacific Grove, CA.

Our research group studies the ecology, physiology, and genomics of marine algae and microbial communities in the ocean. We are particularly interested in the feedbacks between climate change, kelp forests, microbes & carbon cycling. We employ a variety of tools and methods, including field and lab experiments, genomics, bioinformatics, algal culturing, scuba diving, ecophysiology, and biogeochemistry. Overall, our research aims to improve our understanding of coastal marine ecosystems with the overall goal of ensuring a healthy, productive, and resilient ocean.
